When I look back over the past 40 years of being a Caregiver, I realize that I have always been fighting to deliver the highest possible level of care to those who were depending on me to support the highest levels of comfort while living in facilities for a long or short term.
Over and over I was told that my bed baths made people feel like they’d had a shower, and that my presence put people at ease. Still that did not mean that I was a push over who did not speak up when it was necessary to remind people that we’re all humans, all needing mutual love and respect.
These three firings have taught me what it means to not take things personally. Nonetheless, I did not come to this higher perspective right away. First I got angry, and told my bosses in no uncertain terms that losing me was their loss, not mine. I also challenged them to say anything bad about my work, when I have pictures to show, as well as their own words, how exceptional my ability to change people’s bodies and their spaces were.
Instead of going back into facilities, I am now on a journey to build what I have named a Bed Shower, so that anyone can easily give anyone, with any level of difficulty, a proper bed bath or actual shower in bed.
In order to get more people to honor the Golden Rule and start to naturally treat our most fragile and vulnerable members of society with more love, compassion, honesty and dignity, we must first start ensuring that Caregivers, especially Live-In Caregivers in Long Term Care facilities and no longer being exploited as many have been for long. With that in mind I am asking everyone who reads my story to join me as a subscription member of Join-The-Change.com.
